It is kind of amazing, you are at a place where innovation and patent-worthy impacts are made on a daily basis, more so that students such as yourself are the ones who do it.

Prosecution

This Section ‘Prosecution’ is actually mostly related to resources, and guides for those the ones who are pursuing and initiating action. Typically, at MIT you’d find the less inflammatory equivalent as “Complainant”

Proactive Engagement

Publication, Protected Data, and Open-Access

As MIT owns all intellectual properties by Default, releasing information for open-access that was obtained through their library facilities or even as an independent party could be potentially dangerous
https://libraries.mit.edu/scholarly/mit-open-access/

Find out the difference between Copyrighted, Licensing, and Patenting Software and learn how to do so here:
https://tlo.mit.edu/researchers-mit-community/protect/software-open-source-protection

If have participated in a UROP, MEng, Masters, or Academic Thesis Program, you might be relieved to know that you actually maintain the copyright to your thesis (with the strong clause if the work led to a degree the rights are also shared with MIT). Find out more details here.

Intellectual Property

By default, but with some exception, MIT maintains rights to all intellectual property developed by students, faculty, and their facilities. For more details, exceptions, and actually process the order to have that transferred to an individual you must visit here.
https://tlo.mit.edu/researchers-mit-community/protect/ipia-ownership

There is an option to license your work to third-parties. Some reasons to do so may be to earn money from your work, share it a larger domain/database, seek funding/sponsorships at your Research Lab, or to simply complete a contract. MIT’s TLO offers comprehensive help in these disclosures, wisdom, and offers various agreements/options to innovators.

Employer Violations

The newly formed MIT Equal Pay Working Group is committed to advocating for pay equity for MIT students and graduates from diverse backgrounds and experiences in advancement of their career.

The Association of MIT Alumnae (AMITA) recently created a Pay Equity Task Force (PETF) aimed at raising awareness, informing dialogue, and identifying impactful steps toward the ultimate goal of normalizing the culture of confirmed pay equity.

UA Public Affairs will sometimes ask for hostile UROP supervisors/MIT employers, hostile or exploitative working conditions at internships, and being asked to do unpaid work during an interview process.

Academic Violations

It is very important to review your syllabi to make sure that your professors aren’t guilty of Academic Violations. Much like students, faculty must adhere to a code of conduct to ensure the well-being of students and a genuine learning environment.

The Actual Rules of the Violation Can Vary but some common ones to look out for are listed below:

Exams

  • Excluding “final classes” during finals week, no exams, assignments, are allowed after Last Day of Classes
  • For classes without finals, only one assignment can be due between Last Day of Classes and Final Exam Period. Those assignments that are held outside of class time must not exceed 2 hours, must begin no earlier than 7:30 pm, and may not be held on Monday evening.
  • When a test is held outside scheduled class time, a regularly scheduled class hour (lecture or recitation) shall be canceled, or no assignment shall fall due that calendar week.

Syllabus Content

Your syllabus must tell you

  • the Number and kinds of assignments,
  • the precise schedule of tests and due dates for major projects,
  • whether or not there will be a final examination,
  • and the grading criteria and procedure

Not following MIT time repeatedly is a violation - class should start 5 minutes after the scheduled time, and end 5 minutes earlier.

However there are some just annoying things that aren’t violations.

Grades & Assignments

  • Unfortunately, your final letter grade not being released promptly is not a violation, even if it’s all right before the end of the term.
  • Assignments due on a long weekend, or holiday, are not a violation.
  • A PSET being due on the same week as an exam outside of normal class time, as long as a class is canceled, is not a violation.

If you find a potential violation, don’t wait
Try talking  to the professor directly or message on Piazza, if you are trusting of them

Violations can be reported anonymously via ua.mit.edu/policy/violations or to the Chair of the Faculty exam-termregs@mit.edu. Grey areas can be discussed through violations@mit.edu

Low-Cost Free Options

Just because you are be prosecuted by institute law doesn’t mean you

For better or for worse, MIT Police are incentivized to protect Students from facing punitive measures that would “look bad” for the university. A Junior who repeatedly breaks into the room of a Freshman, isn’t tried criminally for Trespassing or even Harassment. “He goes to principal’s office with a note” (IDHR). Much of the offenses

Once Caught

"Any Lawyer Worth His Salt Will Tell the Suspect in No Uncertain Terms to Make No Statements to the Police Under Any Circumstances." - Justice Robert Jackson

Like civil cases, MIT Relies on Preponderance of Evidence. It means to for many of the committee hearing, it means if the case is even 51% percent likely, it will favor that side.
